Philanthropist, and author Tony Robbins, Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.

What Is A Goal?

According to Wikipedia the exact definition of a goal is : The desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. People set a target to achieve a certain goal with a stipulated timeline. Goal setting is important because they build self-confidence and help you increase productivity but the science behind why goals help us focus is more opaque.

The beauty of knowing why something works makes you

A) more willing to embrace it

B) more informed, which therefore makes you better suited to make decisions.

Importance of Goal Setting:

1.Increased Focus

You can have all the potential in the world but without focus your abilities and talent are useless. Just like how sunlight can't burn through anything without a magnifying glass focusing it, you can't achieve anything unless a goal is focusing your effort. Because at the end of the day goals are what give you direction in life. By setting goals for yourself you give yourself a target to shoot for. This sense of direction is what allows your mind to focus on a target and rather than waste energy shooting aimlessly, it allows you to hit your target and reach your goal.

2. Success is measurable

By setting goals for yourself you are able to measure your progress because you always have a fixed endpoint or benchmark to compare with. When you measure progress while working towards a specific goal, you will be able to see that though you might not be where you want to get, you have made movements in the right direction and are a lot better off than where you started.

3. Motivates you

When there is no deadline then work can be easily procrastinated. Setting up goals and deciding on a timeline gives you something to focus on and put 100% of your effort into and this focus is what develops motivation. Goals are simply tools to focus your energy in positive directions, these can be changed as your priorities change, new ones added, and others dropped.

4. Goals Hold You Accountable For Failure

When you do not achieve or hit your target and the project is not a success you know where did the fault lies. You know what could he been done better and with much more zeal and focus.

5. Defining your goals in writing impresses them upon your heart and mind.

6. Goals help you focus your attention on your purpose and make it your dominant aspiration.

7. When you commit yourself to your vision and express it in achievable goals, you provide yourself with the motivation of where you are going and how you anticipate getting there.

8. Goals help you to determine priorities and direct you to focus on what is important.
